Clubmaking Software / Swingweight Calculation /
WHAT IS SWINGWEIGHT: Clubmakers must understand this simple point: It is completely acceptable to develop your own system of club to club matching, whether it be by FREQUENCY MATCHING, MOMENT OF INERTIA MATCHING, TOTAL WEIGHT MATCHING, BALANCE POINT MATCHING, or whatever. However, if you do not use some other method of matching clubs to each other within a set, which you carefully and fully explain to your customer, then you MUST use LORYTHMIC SWINGWEIGHT as a method of building golf clubs.
WHAT IS D - 0.
D - 0 occurs in WOODS when a STANDARD WEIGHT steel shaft (130 gms). is cut to STANDARD driver length (43?) in a STANDARD (205 gm) driver head and finished with a STANDARD grip (55 gms) with no build-up tape. In IRONS when a STANDARD WEIGHT steel shaft (124 gms) is cut to STANDARD 2 iron length (39?) in a STANDARD (232 gm) 2 iron HEAD, and finished with a STANDARD (55 gm) grip with no build-up tape.
WHAT EFFECTS SWINGWEIGHT:
WHAT IS THE SWINGWEIGHT OF THIS GOLF CLUB?
? 70 gm grip
? 63 gm shafts cut to 44 ¼ ?
? 196 gm Driver head. 1. Grip STANDARD weight 55 gms actual 70 gms a difference of plus 15 gms (15/4) equals minus -3.75 swingweight points.
2. Shaft STANDARD weight 130 gms actual 63 gms a difference of minus 67 gms (63/7) equals minus -9.57 swingweight points.
3. Head STANDARD weight 205 gms actual 196 gms a difference of minus 9 gms (9/2)equals minus -4.5 swingweight points.
4. Shaft STANDARD length 43? actual 44 ¼? a difference of plus 1¼? (2.5x3) equals plus +7.5 swingweight points.
5. Grip -3.75, Shaft -9.57(weight), Head -4.5, Shaft +7.5 (length) Total minus -10.32
This golf club would have a swingweight of D - 0 minus 10.32 swingweight points based on the variations of specifications from STANDARD or a measured swingweight of B - 9.7 or C - 0.
The FEEL of this club would be exactly the same if the grip and head where on a steel shaft of 124 gms at 44 ¼? with a swingweight of C - 8.5 because the only specification that has changed is the weight of the shaft.(given the same flex)
You should realize that D - 0 is only obtainable with light weight shafts by increasing the club length excessively, which does not conform to proper clubfitting.
A clubfitter should be able to explain to a client that a swingweight of C - 0 is actually the equivalent of D - 0 based upon the variables of the specifications that effect swingweight.
